The federal territory of Australia whose archaeological history dates back to 40 millennia is the Northern Territory. It is the Australia’s third largest federal division. Northern territory is sparsely populated region and is the least populous of all the eight states and territories of Australia. The citizens of Northern Territory are popularly known as “territorians”.
The list of NT public holidays resembles the lists of public holidays observed at all the other states and territories of Australia.
Similar to other Australian states and territories, the Northern territory also observes special occasions like the New Year day on the 1st of January, Australia day on the 26th of January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac day on the 25th of April, Queen’s Birthday, Christmas day on the 25th of December and Boxing day on the 26th of December.
The list of NT public holidays includes two special days unlike the public holidays’ list of other states and territories. Those two special days are May Day and picnic day.
May Day otherwise known as Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in the month of May to commemorate the hard work done by the workers.
Picnic day is observed on the first Monday in the month of August. It is perceived as a bonus day for workers to take rest and enjoy the long weekend with family and friends. Schools and postal services are also closed on picnic day and bus routes vary in some places. The Harts Range Annual races are held on the long weekend during the picnic day. People enjoy the long weekend participating in various events that are held in Northern Territory.
The dates mentioned in the list of NT public holidays keep varying especially for those special occasions that are celebrated not date wise.
The following days are public holidays under the National Employment Standards:
1 January (New Year’s Day)
26 January (Australia Day)
Good Friday
Easter Monday
25 April (Anzac Day)
Queen’s birthday holiday
(on the day it is celebrated in a state or
territory or a region of a state or territory)
25 December (Christmas Day)
26 December (Boxing Day)
These days may be substituted for another day under state or
territory law, by agreement under the terms of an award or
agreement, or between an employer
and an award / agreement free employee.
Additional public holidays can also be provided under state or
territory law. For example, regional public holidays that apply only
in a specific area, state public holidays for Labour Day and
