Mothers are the living goddesses. It is important to dedicate at least one day to honor those goddesses and celebrate the eternal love they shower on children. Every second Sunday in the month of May is celebrated as Mother’s day throughout the world except a few nations that celebrate the day in different months.
Tributes to mothers date back to the spring festival celebrated by the Greeks to honor Rhea, the mother of many deities while the Romans honored Cybele, the great mother of Gods. On the other hand, Christians celebrated b> mother’s day in honor of Mother Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
While different nations celebrated Mother’s day on different notes, the British had expanded the very thought of celebrating mother’s day by including all mothers and naming the day as Mothering Sunday.
History reveals the story of Ann Jarvis who motivated her work force union to work together in 1858 and named the day as “Mother’s work days.” After Ann passed away in 1905, her daughter Anna distributed flowers to each of the mothers at her Church.
With this the idea of honoring mothers and celebrating motherhood has spread across the US. Later in 1914, the second Sunday in the month of May was declared as Mother’s day by then president. The mothers who lost their son’s at the war front were honored on the day.
On mother’s day, most people write letters to their mothers or either meet them to convey the gratitude they have towards the person who stood as a stepping stone towards the success of their lives. Though there is no act determined in the world that can be a return gift to motherhood, people celebrate mother’s day as they perceive it as an opportunity to at least thank their mothers for everything she had done to raise them.
