Boxing Day

Christmas fun and fantasy is not just limited to 25th of December. The celebrations fever passes on to the next day as well to rejoice the poor by sharing gifts with them.

26th of December is the day people open their Christmas boxes of gifts and so it is celebrated as the Boxing Day.

Another significance of the day is that most people like to share the contents of their gift box with the less fortunate children and poor people.

History reveals that while starting off to explore new lands, ships carried the Christmas boxes as a symbol of luck. The box is placed on every ship by a priest and the crew men dropped money in it to ensure their safe return. The box was handed over to the priest after the crew came back safe. The priest then waited till Christmas and then unpacked the box to share the money with the less fortunate ones. As these boxes were opened on the 26th of December every year, this day is celebrated as Boxing Day.

On the other hand, another story the history reveals is that an Alms box was arranged in every church on Christmas and the devotees dropped money or gifts into the box for the less fortunate ones in Parish. This box was opened on the day post Christmas and so this day became popular as Boxing Day.

Interestingly another version of the Boxing Day states that most poor people worked on  Christmas day and they took the next day off to go back home and meet their family. While they got ready for an exciting holiday, their employers gave them Christmas boxes and so this day came into popularity as Boxing Day. Most schools across the world collect gifts to share with the poor on this day.
